I Am That Foolish

I am that foolish that I will keep loving you after you’ve stopped loving me.

I am that foolish that even if you unfriend me – whether on social media or in real-life – I will still keep loving you. I will still keep being your friend. I will still keep praying for you.

I am that foolish that when I love you, I will forget most of the horrible things you’ve said or done.

I am that foolish that I will reach out not once, not twice, not three times, but for as long as my hope remains.

I am that foolish that I truly believe that love conquers all.

I am that foolish that I see and believe in your potential, and often ignore your reality.

I am that foolish that I believe in your dreams and will help you fulfill them, even if you don’t believe in me and mine.

I am that foolish that I love without reserve.

I am that foolish that even when I have recognized that you don’t have my best interest at heart, if you’re hurting, I will try to help you.

I am that foolish that I will never stop believing in love.

I am that foolish.

Constantly Thinking...

End Note: I am proud to be that foolish because you know who else is that foolish? Jesus.

How I Stopped Attracting Heathens

About a year ago, I decided and declared that I would no longer attract the dangerous, damaging, destructive type of people - HEATHENS - I'd been attracting.

Instead, I made the conscious decision that I would attract and surround myself with wonderful people of integrity, faithful, loyal, great character, good hearts, kind, smart, funny, strong, humble people.

And I did!

I am now surrounded by great, good people. I work with and for people who are models of integrity and great character, absolutely amazing men and women! My closest friends - new and lifelong - are goodness and light.

Don't get me wrong, there are still HEATHENS out there...and I encounter them regularly. The difference is that now they don't stick. They don't stay. They can't slide into the holes of brokenness that were open for them before.

I know some of you are thinking, "Wait. Birds of a feather..." That's only partially correct. Opposites also attract. Victims attract bullies or abusers. Naive people attract scam artists. "The trust of the innocent is the liar's most useful tool." (S. King.)

I unintentionally attracted people who were preying on my naivete, brokenness and weakness. Here are the steps I took to break the cycle.

First, I had to become more self-aware. I had to recognize and admit to myself that, as smart as I am, I can also be very trusting and naive. Smart people don't want to admit that about themselves. If you don't, however, you can get stuck.

Second, I made a declaration: "I am NOT going to attract these types of people anymore." Seems basic, but it's not. Verbalizing a decision is powerful and priceless. Words have power. When we hear ourselves say it, we begin to rewire our brain.

Third, I tuned my radar and discernment toward the good people. We can't stay focused on what we don't want. We have to tune our focus and attention on what we do want. When you start shopping for a new house, you begin to see more houses for sale. When you decide it's time to upgrade your car, you start looking at new car models. That's when you know you mean business. When I decided to change my circle, I started paying attention to the type of people I wanted to attract.

Fourth, and possibly most importantly, I walked it out and walked away.
When predators, liars, cheaters, pessimists, thieves, schemers and other cruel people - HEATHENS - started to come my way, I turned them away or turned my back. I stopped trying to search for the good in them. Their goodness has to be more apparent than that. If I have to dig through the crap to find it, that's a warning sign. That may sound harsh. It's not. I don't shun the broken...we're all broken. I repel the destructive people. I may still have to deal with them for business, or because they're a family member, but they won't be part of my inner circle. They won't have access to my heart, mind or spirit.

There was a time when I was so surrounded by HEATHENS that I thought the world was overrun by them. It's not. My perspective was skewed because a handful of them surrounded the cage I was trapped in.

My life is so much better, lighter, happier, calmer, Godlier because I stopped attracting HEATHENS!

You should try it.

Heart-Sick Over Evil

Thinking about former friends and former loves today...with a bit of sadness in my heart.

This is one of those days when I miss what I thought we had... true love, true friendship, a real relationship.

I miss the friend I believed you were.

I miss the love that seemed real at the time.

I miss the closeness we seemed to share.

All I can say is it was real to me, then and now. If you were just playing, just toying with me, just using me and my love or my friendship, shame on you. That's kind of evil. You'll have to live with that.

What I felt was true. What I gave was real. My love, my friendship was sincere.

Of course, if I had to do it all over again, eyes wide open, knowing what I know now, I'd walk away before my heart ever became engaged, before I ever extended my friendship and my love to you.

The good thing is that I learned from it all so I have no regrets.

I've learned that there are really good sincere people out there. I've learned that there are true friends who know how to both give and take. I've learned that there are truly noble, faithful, wonderful men in the world.

People who are fakers, takers, insincere, liars, and cheaters try to convince you that everyone is that way. Here's a tip: They're wrong. The reason they think that is because that's their circle. Everyone they associate with... falls into their category. They're surrounded by people just like them.

That's their choice. I've chosen a different path.

I choose the path of sincerity, true friendship, faithfulness, truthfulness and love. It is because of that choice that my heart hurts today. My heart hurts for what I thought we had, what we could have had.

My heart is a muscle, though. It will heal and keep on loving.

Constantly Thinking...and making better choices...

My First and My Last

Thinking about my firsts…
  • The first man who kissed me and made me see stars.
  • The first man who took me on the most romantic and most memorable first date.
  • The first man who captured my heart and caused me to fall head over heels in love.
  • The first man I shared myself with intimately.
  • The first man who made me see stars intimately.
  • The first man I married.
  • The first man who made me feel safe.

My firsts will always hold a special place in my heart, but I’m looking forward to the one man who will be my last and my final.

I can feel him approaching...and my heart is already overflowing with love and anticipation.

Constantly Thinking...about my last love.

Beware: The Hungry Heart

As a heart-led person, I realize that I need to always be aware of the fullness level of my heart and make sure it doesn’t get too depleted. I have learned that when it does, I can make really bad heart-led decisions.

Of course, as a believer, I also need to make sure my spirit stays connected, full and healthy. When both my spirit and heart are filled, I find that it is much easier for me to follow the spirit, as I should.

I’ve learned, however, that when my heart is at too much of a deficit, it will over-rule my spirit to find fullness (in all the wrong places).

Here, then, are the things that fill my heart…

  • Spending time together
  • Enjoying conversation
  • Having someone lovingly play with my hair
  • Holding hands
  • Cuddling; tender touches
  • Thoughtfulness
  • Verbally being valued or appreciated; words of affirmation
  • Being listened to
  • Kissing
  • Laughing together
  • Playing games together
  • Doing jigsaw puzzles together
  • Being protected
  • Being remembered
  • Phone calls, texts and emails – just because
  • Listening to music together
  • Watching movies and TV together
  • Overhearing someone speak of me with sweetness, love or admiration
  • Knowing that someone believes in me

Yes, as you can probably tell... I am an absolute romantic, who loves love.

So, what fills your heart?

Constantly thinking…

Love Never Felt So Good

I have finally learned how it feels to be cherished.

All my life, I have happily loved and given my heart without reserve – to friends, family and the great loves of my life. Until recently, however, I had never experienced that kind of love in return – certainly not in a romantic relationship.

I say I “happily” loved that way, and in many ways I did. But I found there’s something very empty about a one-sided love. Unconditional love, the cherish kind of love can be given whether it’s returned or not. God teaches us that. As humans, however, we have physical reactions when our love is unrequited, when we feel rejected or abandoned.

That time, for me, has ended. For the first time in my life, I am experiencing a mutual “cherish” type of love.

The Cherish kind of love is a love where…

  • You don’t have to guess how the other person feels. They show you constantly.
  • You know and remember each other’s likes and dislikes.
  • You feel safe with them – whether in person or from afar.
  • They never make you prove your worth. They know your worth, and you know theirs.
  • What’s important to you is important to them, and vice versa.
  • You do little things just to please the other or make them smile.
  • They comfort you and strengthen you when you’re weak.
  • They lovingly encourage you and push you to be your best.
  • They are always truthful. There are no secrets between you.
  • Nothing and no one is allowed to come in between your relationship.
  • You both know unequivocally that you have each other’s backs.
  • You can laugh together - at yourselves and each other, without offense.
  • You don’t tear each other down to build yourselves up – not even in humor.
  • They respect you and never ask you to compromise your standards.
  • You can grow together.
  • It's safe to share your innermost thoughts and dreams.
  • They protect you.
  • Even when you’re having challenges, you feel safe. You know you’re both so committed to the relationship that challenges won’t tear you apart. Challenges won’t cause one of you to stray or speak ill of the other to outsiders.
  • They never ignore you.
  • You trust each other.

I have finally found the cherish kind of love…or rather, it’s found me. I’d known him for a while and always cared for him, but I didn’t realize just how much he loved me. He was patient and waited for me. He watched me get my heart broken multiple times, knowing if I’d chosen him instead, things would have been different.

Finally, he declared himself and his love for me. He’d tried before, but I hadn’t realized his full intent. This time, I heard him.

This time, this relationship, I’m starting off slowly. I am learning to trust him with my heart as he entrusts his heart to me, and it feels wonderful.

This kind of love…this cherish kind of love...is what I’ve been waiting for.

Love never felt so good.

I love you, my love.

10 Dating Pitfalls for Single Christian Women

Not every match is a match made in heaven. Here are 10 dating pitfalls that I have frequently heard or observed single Christian women experiencing, and some of which I’ve experienced myself, unfortunately.

1) Assuming every man in church is saved
It would be wonderful if this was the case but, alas, it is not. Just because you meet a man in church doesn’t mean he’s a believer. I’ve heard more Christian women lament, “But I met him in church!” If you met a man in a hospital, it wouldn’t mean he was a doctor. If you met a man at the grocery store, it wouldn’t mean he knew how to cook. Just because a man is at church doesn’t mean he has a relationship with Jesus. He may be there for business reasons, or he could be scouting for good Christian women - with no positive intent in mind. Most importantly, he may be there because he’s trying to turn his life around – but hasn’t yet.

2) Assuming all good men are in church
Church is not the only place to meet a good man. Good men are everywhere. You can meet them at school, in the work place, through mutual friends, at a company or business you frequent. Sometimes they’re new to the area and haven’t found a church home yet. Sometimes they haven’t yet received Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and perhaps you’ll be the one who introduces them. Church is not a destination or pick-up spot for singles, it should be a foundational place of spiritual rejuvenation. Most of us meet people all day long in all of our business and personal dealings. Should a man assume you’re not a good woman because he didn’t meet you in church? I'm Christian all day long, wherever I am. My good man will be, too, regardless of where we end up meeting.

3) Assuming all men in church are good
Not all men who are in church and claim to be Christian are good men (or even Christian men). They may be a new believer whose spirit has not yet been renewed – so they still engage in criminal or other destructive behavior. Or, they may be a Judas – someone who knows the truth, and hangs around with Jesus, but whose heart is hardened. They may be someone who’s living a double life – a man who’s looking to have a Christian wife and family as a façade so that he can still appear to be a pillar and man of integrity to his friends, family and community – but really he’s on the DL, or he’s a serial adulterer, or he’s a child molester. It sounds extreme, but I’m personally aware of all of these things happening to Christian women.

4) Forgetting you’re an ambassador for Christ and compromising yourself emotionally and physically

Christian single women can become unintentional hypocrites when their heart gets involved. You proclaim you’re holy and abstaining, but once you get involved with that fine smooth talker, your flesh gets enflamed and you find yourself saying one thing but engaging in another. Ladies, a good man will never put you in a compromising position – regardless of whether he’s a believer or not. It’s common for men to say (and women to believe), “Well, if you’re putting it out there, we’re going to take it.” All men don’t feel that way. That’s a fallacy. There are good men out there who will walk away even from a woman who’s throwing herself at him. And that’s what we need to do, walk away from a man who encourages us to compromise ourselves. If you were a US ambassador to a foreign country, could someone in that country convince you to break every law and act in an unbecoming way that would cause you to lose your ambassadorship? If they tried, wouldn’t you walk away from them? As Christians, we are all ambassadors for Christ. We should walk away from anyone who would try to get us to compromise our position. That doesn’t just apply to singles, or women, it applies to all Christians.

5) Falling prey to false prophets
Many Christian women are tragically naïve when approached by men who say they’re Christian. There are men who will pursue you, knowing you’re a Christian, and say God told them you were supposed to be together. Women automatically believe them because they used God’s name, and therefore, naïvely neglect to check out the man’s character. Even the demons didn’t buy it when some false prophets tried to use Jesus’ name. (Acts 19:13-16) Why do we, who claim to know Jesus and who, as His sheep, should recognize His voice, fall prey to men who invoke His name? A young woman I know, fell prey to an ex-con with no job, an abusive past, and a host of other women he was sleeping with, because he told her that God said she was supposed to be his – and she believed him. I asked her if she believed that I would fix her up with a man like that. She said no – that if he’d used MY name, she would have known he was lying because I’d never send her a man like that. I told her that meant she knew my voice and character more than she knew God’s. She needed to spend more time with God so she would know His voice, His character and the kind of man He’d send her. No one should be able to dupe us, as Christians, by using God’s name as a character reference.

6) Believing God will make the forbidden apple “unforbidden” just for you
Once we’ve found ourselves attracted to and/or involved with the wrong man, we begin praying to God to make him the right man. We envision ourselves as David’s Bathsheba – it started off wrong, but then became right when they ended up becoming Solomon’s parents. Maybe, just maybe, God will bless our mess, too. He won’t. David and Bathsheba’s mess caused the death of two people – her husband and their child. There is a price to pay for being out of order with God. The forbidden apple is forbidden for a reason.  Gather your strength, walk away and repent before even greater destruction occurs.

7) Sending mixed messages

Christian women dress in provocative clothing and pick up men at the club; or take scantily clad pictures and post them on online dating sights. They present themselves as one type of woman to capture a man’s attention, then they try to spring on him that they’re really a good Christian girl. Many men will just walk away when they realize they’ve been duped. However, for those who don’t, all your “mixed message” behavior tells him is that even though you may go to church, you are absolutely willing to compromise your Christian principles to be with a man. He knows, at some point, he’ll be able to get anything he wants.

8) Assuming every man who approaches you was sent by God

Many Christian women look at every single man they meet and think, “Could he be the one??” I’m sorry to say, most are not. How could every man possibly be sent by God? And you don’t have to test them all out either. Use your discernment and decline some approaches. You do not have to say yes to every man who asks you out or asks for your number - and that's not being unkind or judgmental, it's being wise.
I recently realized that I relied more on my dating discernment skills before I was saved than after I got saved. Before I was saved, if someone even smelled funny, he didn’t make the cut. Once I was saved, however, I ignored the red flags that even the Holy Spirit was sending to me. I entered into relationships that sent my spirit into a tailspin because I repeatedly heard – “Maybe it’s not them, maybe you’re just being judgmental.” I didn't just hear that from others or only from the men who wanted me to give them a chance, I said it to myself, as well.
Ladies, we have a discerning spirit for a reason. If we don’t listen to it before our heart gets engaged, we will most assuredly experience heartache.

9) Assuming every man who approaches you was sent by the devil
Just as all men you meet aren’t good men, all men you meet aren’t evil either. I know some women who think any man who approaches them must be after one thing, one wrong thing. They feel like God Himself will place the right man in their life, miraculously, at the right time. One day, they’ll just wake up married. Um, no. It doesn’t work like that. Men – good ones and bad ones – will approach you, and should. It’s up to you to determine how to respond, by listening to the Holy Spirit inside of you.
When you realize you’re not compatible with a man, that doesn’t mean he’s Satan’s spawn. It just means he’s meant for someone else. Yes, there will be counterfeits who try to get our attention or capture our heart for the wrong reasons but, again, that’s why we have discernment. If we follow our spirit – versus our flesh, brain or heart – we will know which men deserve our attention and which ones don’t.

10) Assuming you’re compatible and equally yoked with any and all Christian men
Many Christian single women don’t realize that even though someone may wear the Christian label, they may still be unequally yoked with you. This is, by far, the biggest pitfall in my opinion. “Christian” is huge category, that people mistakenly seem to think covers or includes all that is good and right and compatible with us. We don’t do that with any other characteristic. The thinking seems to be: He’s Christian, therefore he’s perfect. He’s Christian, therefore he thinks and acts just like you do. He’s Christian, therefore his purpose and beliefs, child-rearing opinions, political views, money management skills, husband ability, work ethic, etc., etc. are just like yours. That is NOT true.
Would you say that about anything else? He’s a Republican, therefore you two will be perfect for each other. He’s from France and so are you, therefore you two will be perfect for each other. He has a job, and so do you, therefore you will be perfect for each other. He walks upright and so do you, therefore you must be a match made in heaven.
When the Bible talks about being equally yoked, it doesn’t just mean Christian vs. non-Christian. The Bible talks about different belief systems even within the Christian faith. It talks about levels of faith. It talks about meat vs. milk. Equally yoked applies to all of that.
At most, being Christian is a starting point. The same way “he’s male, I’m female” is a starting point. Okay, we have the basics out of the way, now let’s look at the rest of the character.
To that end, don’t try to fit or force men who are unequally yoked into your Christian image – even if you’re both Christian. It won’t work and it will just frustrate both of you.

As you mature and prepare yourself for being in a strong, loving, life-long relationship, remember that the selection process is the most important thing before entering into covenant. If you can avoid some of the above pitfalls, it can save you a literal lifetime of heart ache.

Constantly Thinking...about relationships...

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This blog deals, specifically, with some of the pitfalls and incorrect thinking that Christian single women deal face because I have found some challenges to be unique to them. However, most of the time when I speak to, counsel and address women (single or married) their religious beliefs have little or no bearing on the issues of the heart.

If you’re teaching someone how to swim or ride a bike, it doesn’t matter what their religious beliefs are. Some things are just fundamental. Most of my relationship counseling is based on the fundamental issues.

Heart-Led, Flesh-Led, Brain-Led or Spirit-Led?

Do you ever wonder “How did I end up in this relationship?!”

I recently received a revelation and understanding that has forever changed my life and my life choices.

We all know that we are three-part beings – spirit, soul (or mind), and body – but there are four distinct aspects of our being that can propel us forward in love, family or business relationships. Spirit, Heart, Brain or Body – one of these four typically dominates and guides most, if not all, of our thinking and behavior.

Body (or Flesh)
People who are flesh-led have the least restraint. They want what they want right now – whether it’s that piece of cake, that new pair of shoes, or that man or woman. They have to have it NOW. They also have no restraint when it comes to their temper or their words. They have flashes of anger and say whatever comes to mind while they’re mid-emotion. “I couldn’t help it” is a frequent phrase for them. Flesh-led people are rarely able or willing to look past the “right now” and plan for the future. Flesh-led people tend to move from interest to interest, job to job, person to person. When it stops “feeling good” they move on. Flesh-led people are constantly dealing with the repercussions of their actions or their words.

Brain
Brain-led people deal with facts they can see. Decisions (in business and relationships) have to make sense on paper for them to move ahead. They are typically very analytical and logical – even though, at times, their logic is faulty. They rarely, if ever, do anything by faith because faith is not logical. Brain-led people are not typically risk-takers. If it doesn’t add up on paper, they’re not going to risk it. Brain-led people usually keep a checklist handy – either a physical one or a running checklist in their head. Brain-led people are able to think and plan ahead, to a point. However, their forecasting is only based on facts they can see or easily anticipate. When the facts or circumstances don’t align with their logical plan, their whole game is thrown off. Brain-led people think that heart-led people are starry-eyed, illogical and foolhardy.

Heart
Heart-led people typically make decisions and enter into relationships based on deep emotions. They tend to believe the best in people, even when all indications are to the contrary. The saying “the heart wants what the heart wants” is profoundly true for heart-led people. Once their heart is engaged, they tend to hold on – defying logic and spirit. The heart and the brain are frequently at war, as love is not logical. Heart-led people are frequently taken advantage of because of their willingness to give second chances to people (and third, fourth, hundredth…). Many mothers – especially those who are unable to enforce any kind of discipline – have a heart-led relationship with their children. Conversely, a heart-led person with significant heart damage can be very dangerous. In an attempt to protect or fix their heart, they make deeply emotional decisions to exact revenge, or hurt someone the way they were hurt. Revenge is usually a heart-led emotion – caused by a very damaged heart (vs. jealousy which is typically flesh-led).

Spirit
People who are Spirit-led tend to be guided by something they can’t always put into words. They’ll have a “knowing” inside of them about the steps they should take. People can be Spirit-led regardless of their religious affiliation. People who frequently say “something told me to do that” (or not to do that) are in touch with their spirit. Spirit-led people pay attention when the hairs on the back of their neck stand up – even when it’s not logical. Spirit-led people tend to think in terms of long-term impact, legacy building. Spirit-led parents are comfortable using tough love with their children, knowing it will build their character or strengthen them down the line. Spirit-led people tend to be faithful, patient, disciplined with their words and their actions. Spirit-led people truly understand that there’s something bigger than themselves at work in the world. They believe in God or a higher power, recognizing that since they didn’t create themselves, what or whoever did create them will give them guidance periodically or frequently. Spirit-led people look and wait for that inner confirmation before responding to their heart, brain or flesh.

I have learned that I am a Heart and Spirit-led person. However, when my Heart is fully engaged, it tends to dominate my decision-making – over-ruling my Spirit and my Brain.

My charge, therefore, is first to make sure I keep my Spirit fed – through prayer, continuous dialogue with God, and studying His word. Then, when I feel my Heart being stirred, I have to immediately assess the object of its affection by the Spirit. If I don’t, if I just allow my Heart free reign, I end up in ungodly relationships.

Of my three most significant relationships, two were Heart-led, and one was Brain-led (coming off of a broken Heart). In both of my Heart-led relationships, both my Brain and my Spirit warned me against them. In my Brain-led relationship, my Heart, Spirit and Flesh (!) warned me against it.

Understanding now that I’m a Heart-led person helps me understand my choices, and causes me to be more aware of my own weaknesses and stumbling blocks. Frequently (thankfully!), my Spirit leads me away from bad people and relationships. It’s my Spirit that set the standard for me not to date anyone I wouldn’t marry. It’s the Spirit that will lead me into my next (and prayerfully, final) relationship.

So, what guides you in relationships? You don’t have to tell me, but you should be self-aware enough to know. Take a look back at your previous love relationships, look at your relationships with your children, your friends, your jobs. Are you Flesh-Led, Brain-Led, Heart-Led or Spirit-Led?

I will say this, when you are Spirit-Led, all of the other areas will be well-fed – Heart, Brain and Flesh.

If you frequently find yourself in unfulfilling or damaging relationships, consider making a change in what you allow to lead your decisions. 2013 could be a fantastic year for you!

Constantly Thinking (and Loving and Praying)
